Your Magnetic Lifetime is an ongoing project, first conceived in 1987 after experimenting with Paris RATP tickets, using found magnetic material, or items with a magnetic strip or coating. This generally involves (but is not limited to): bus, train and air tickets, credit and debit cards, access cards and electronic room keys, car park tickets, bank books, store cards, medical cards, identity cards, etc.
Your magnetic lifetime transforms magnetic ‘trash’ which has outlived that narrow and  functional character into a compositional process/sound environment.

A selection of the magnetic waste described above is arranged in different combinations with various content. Some strips contain messages recorded by the artist which vary from exhibition to exhibition. Sound is generated by using hand-held modified cassette recorders to ‘scan’ the tracks. Visitors to the installation are encouraged to participate and to ‘play back’ their own credit cards and tickets, to see them as instruments they never even knew they possessed. This enables a variety of sonic environments to come into being, and new performance relationships to appear in such impropmtu ‘jam sessions’. The resulting soundtrack of bleeps, tones, snatches of words etc. is thus assembled from someone’s magnetic lifetime.
